Louwman Museum
Sports, racing, film
The collection includes some of the most beautiful cars in history. There are sports and racing cars driven by legendary names at Grands Prix and races such as Le Mans and Indianapolis; vehicles owned by celebrities like Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen and Sir Winston Churchill; and cars that have featured in films, including the taxi from The Godfather and the Aston Martin driven by James Bond in Goldfinger and Thunderball.
Sharp contrasts
But the museum is not just a collection of cars. It was created by passionate people who knew a great deal about every aspect of the automobile. The imposing cars of the 1930s, when money was seemingly no object, are just as fascinating as the horseless carriages of the late nineteenth century, and there are stark contrasts between majestic luxury vehicles and the first attempts at affordable family cars. Some are the only examples ever made; others were extremely limited editions; and others still were built in the millions. Their design and technology, too, reflect differences between the cultures which created them.
A part in history
Some of the automobiles on display are veritable time machines, never restored and creating a visible, almost tangible connection with the past. Each has its own story to tell, each has played its own part in history, each holds up a mirror to society.
