Hut and cold
The ice huts of Canada are unique spaces that provide shelter to the nation’s ice fishermen. Photographer Richard Johnson travels coast to coast to document them

Richard Johnson has become fascinated by Canada’s ice-fishing huts. These structures are designed to offer proctection from the elements, to be transportable from one spot to another, and to allow access to the ground below, so holes may be cut in the ice.
For this project, Johnson – who specialises in architectural and interior photography – travels the length and breadth of Canada. “My visual style is simple yet intentional,” he says of the Ice Huts project, to allow the viewer to properly compare each structure. The ice huts are, he says, “a form of renegade architecture that verges on the development of a folk art tradition.” See www.icehuts.ca for more.
