CONVERSATION STARTERS

The intriguing question on the left of this page is just one of the discussion points that appears in the recently published coffee-table tome, The Book Of Conversations. It’s the brainwave of Jason Schragger and Mark Carolan who want to encourage us all to make some noise and get talking to each other. The book consists of 120 questions, each one illustrated by a different artist, photographer or graphic designer. The creatives were asked to design an image to help encourage discussion. This London city scene is the entry from eBoy, who create complex pixel art illustrations. www.bookofconversations.com

Blowing in the wind

THREE METRES HEIGHT OF SCULPTURE
2006 YEAR IT WAS BUILT

Sitting serenely on top of Crown Point, above the city of Burnley in the north of England, is a stunning sound sculpture called the Singing Ringing Tree. This unique musical shape takes the form of a tree bending against the wind. The three-metre tall construction is made out of galvanised steel pipes which harness the energy of the wind to produce a low and mellow hum, tuned so as not to disturb the surrounding wildlife. The singing qualities of the tree were produced by tuning the pipes according to their length and by adding holes to the underside of each. If you are not heading to Lancashire anytime soon, you can listen to the Singing Ringing Tree on YouTube.com.
